I am going to have some SLAVES serving at my party!

This is some bullshit! I liked Paula Dean too! I really wanted to taste that buttermilk fried chicken. Now, she can choke on it. A lot of white southerners think of slavery as no big deal.

Paula Deen is an honest racist. The cooking show host is currently embroiled in a million dollar lawsuit over racist behavior at her Savannah restaurant. Deen and her brother Bubba allegedly threw around the N-word and told racist and sexist jokes that, so far, she doesn’t deny. But then she said something about wanting to hire black cater waiters to act as slaves at a Southern wedding, and she replied:

“The whole entire waiter staff was middle-aged black men, and they had on beautiful white jackets with a black bow tie. I mean, it was really impressive. That restaurant represented a certain era in America… after the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War… It was not only black men, it was black women… I would say they were slaves.”

Totally honest. Completely crazy. White privilege, y’all.

I copied this verbatim from somewhere.

Chime in…

  1. Southern culture and history. On the one hand, you can’t blame them for remembering their history even though even most Southerners would prefer not to be remembered for that period in their history and the history of our country. On the other hand, this is the 21st century; no one thinks that being a racist, honest or otherwise, is adorable, cute, or even necessary… but some folks can’t help themselves or, in some cases, they’re playing a role because for some stupid reason, they think that we – those of us not from the South – expect them to behave this way.

I like Paula Deen and her folksy, countrified behavior. I read this piece and while I frowned at it, I wasn’t offended by it. Black folks would love nothing more than to have that period of time erased; we’d prefer not to be reminded of the racism that still festers in this country like a puss-filled wound that will never heal.

It’s bad enough that we call each other nigger, even in a weird, nice way. The word, which just doesn’t apply to Blacks, is abhorrent and so much that Richard Pryor, probably the best comedian EVER and well-known for his use of the word, declared that after his trip to Africa, he was never going to call another Black man a nigger again.

We all need to adopt this, Black, white, HIspanic, whatever. As long as there’s one person who thinks it’s their God-given right to call another person a nigger and treat them like slaves, shit like this will forever continue to persist.

And, given the legal trouble she’s in, it only goes to prove that the person you see on the screen may not be the same person in person…
